The Visa Lottery Registration Program affords an opportunity to immigrate to many who do not qualify under these categories. Each year, the Department of State designates a 30-day period for registration in this program. Only 50,000 individuals are chosen every year. The best source to stay informed is the Department of Stateweb site where you will find information on who qualifies, what countries are eligible, and information on how and where to apply. Caveat: Although there is no special application form and the information requested is not complicated, those who apply should be aware that if they are in the U.S. and out of status, or have committed visa or entry fraud, they should consult an attorney. There are many other factors which are decisive in determining whether an application should be filed or pursued.
To qualify for the DV Program you must: 1. have a high school education or its equivalent or have worked two years in an occupation that requires two years of training or experience; 2. register within the dates provided by the State Department each year; 3. submit only one application per person; 4. properly fill out the application form (includes submission of a recent photo); and send to the appropriate address. For more information, click on the State Department link provided on this page or call 1-900-884-8840. A flat rate of $5.10 will be charged to your phone bill.
