Attorney General John Ashcroft announced at a press conference on June 5th that the Department of Justice has issued a proposed regulation requiring the registration and monitoring of certain non-immigrants. Under the new regulations, non-immigrants from designated countries and other aliens that INS inspectors will identify at the port of entry will be rquired to submit fingerprints and officially register at the time of their arrival.

Thirty days after their arrival, and every year after entry, these specifically targeted individuals must appear in person at an INS office to provide evidence relating their status in the U.S.

According to the Attorney General, any person who does not comply with the registration procedures will be placed in a criminal database and be subject to removal from the United States.
